CENELEC recently established the new technical committee CLC/TC 220 ‘Alcohol interlocks’, with the Secretariat held by DKE, to continue and further develop European standardization work in this important safety area. The technical committee’s scope is to develop European Standards on alcohol interlocks that improve road, transport, workplace and individual safety by preventing people with an alcohol level above a specified limit from operating vehicles, equipment or engaging in unsafe activities. Where necessary, the scope may also be extended to include drug detection.
On 29 June, Small Business Standards (SBS) gathered nearly 100 guests at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels for its Stakeholder Reception and inaugural Awards Ceremony, the highlight of the 4th edition of MeetingStandards.
The International Federation of Standards Users (IFAN) continues to strengthen its engagement with the global standards community through new partnerships and outreach initiatives. Recent developments include a cooperation agreement with IQNET and the continued growth of the IFAN podcast, which provides a platform for standards users and experts from around the world to share their experiences and insights.
The Institute for Standardization of Serbia (ISS) had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Magnus Hakvåg, Chief Executive Officer of House of Knowledge, who visited ISS for the first time. During his full-day stay, he presented an innovative approach to education through the application of so-called “serious games”—educational games designed to facilitate knowledge acquisition and skills development.
As digitalization and the green transition continue to shape society, standards play an increasingly important role in ensuring that products and services are safe, reliable, accessible and fit for purpose. Alongside its core responsibility of developing and adopting standards, the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) places particular emphasis on engaging consumers and raising public awareness of the value of standardization. These activities illustrate how a national standards body can promote broader stakeholder involvement and increase awareness of the role of standardization in society.

As the products brought on the European Single Market have a significant environmental impact, the European Union decided on a mandatory Digital Product Passport (DPP) to store the circularity data of products for various product groups. Since products brought on the European Single Market have a significant environmental impact, it is necessary to know the parameters of each product and to exchange circularity and sustainability information with all stakeholders.
A new CEN Workshop is being established to build upon the innovative outcomes of the European research project BIO-SUSHY (Bio-based Functional Coatings: Standardization of Application Guidelines, Performance evaluation and Safety Assessment for Sustainable Packaging). The project’s vision is to develop a sustainable and safe alternative to coatings made from per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances for use across a variety of industries.
The European Commission, through the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), is funding experts to join the TRUST project. It is a strategic initiative which primary objective is to provide, for road restraint systems, a technical contribution in support of Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 November 2024 laying down harmonized rules for the marketing of construction products and repealing Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 and CPR Acquis.
