Methane (CH4) is the second most important Greenhouse Gas (GHG) contributor to climate change. 60% of the global methane emissions result from human activity, 1/3 of which is generated in the energy sector. To address the climate change challenge, the European Union has adopted Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 on the reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector, which sets ambitious requirements applicable to the oil and fossil gas infrastructures in Europe. Considering that the EU imports most of its oil and fossil gas, Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 also addresses methane emissions occurring outside the EU, with respect to crude oil and natural gas (the main component of which is methane) placed on the EU market.
In March 2026, the CENELEC Technical Committee CLC/TC 111X ‘Environment’ published a new standard on the quantification and communication of carbon footprint and GHG emissions reduction from electric and electronic products. At a time when climate transparency is becoming a key expectation across global markets, this standard offers a harmonized approach to assessing and communicating environmental performance.
The CENELEC Workshop was kicked off on 21st October 2025, following the results of the Horizon Europe projects OPENTUNITY and FEDECOM. The Workshop’s registered participants have agreed on the first draft of the CWA.

A new CEN-CENELEC Workshop is being planned as part of the activities of the EU project 'Enhancing energy audit schemes in energy intensive industries with practical approaches' (LIFE22-CET-LIFE AUDIT-PLUS). The aim of this project is to examine in detail the Energy Efficiency (EE) of several Energy Intensive Industries (EII) across Europe and provide tailored guidance and long-term support.

Five harmonized European standards for thermal energy meters have been officially cited in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), following the publication of Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/1939. This milestone marks a significant step forward in supporting the EU’s internal market and regulatory framework for measuring instruments under the Measurement Instruments Directive (MID – Directive 2014/32/EU).
A new CENELEC Workshop is being planned which will complement the intersecting activities of the EU Research projects 'OPENTUNITY' and 'FEDECOM'. OPENTUNITY focuses on opening up the electricity ecosystem to increase the efforts of decarbonisation, while FEDECOM focuses on the technical and business ecosystem to demonstrate the advantages of energy sector coupling.
CEN-CLC/JTC 14 ‘Energy management and energy efficiency in the framework of energy transition’ welcomes the publication of a new standard, EN 16325:2025 ‘Guarantees of origin related to energy,’ developed by Working Group 5.
