At the European level, the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is the system deployed for the management and interoperation of signalling for railways by the European Union (EU). The ERTMS ensures interoperability of the national railway systems, reducing the purchasing and maintenance costs of the signalling systems as well as increasing the speed of trains, the capacity of infrastructure and the level of safety in rail transport.

With the launch of the first Standards+Innovation Awards, CEN, CENELEC and their members took important steps towards giving researchers well-deserved recognition for their contribution to standardization. Education in standardization based on European values also reinforces Europe’s capacity to contribute to international standardization activities. With the new award category dedicated to education, CEN and CENELEC address the need for education and skills identified in the EU Standardization Strategy released in 2022 and the Code of Practice on standardization published in 2023.
