The ETUC has been actively contributing to the development of the standard on AI Risk Management (prEN 18228), which is now under Public Enquiry until the end of July. This standard is intended to support Article 9 of the AI Act. Its adoption will therefore be particularly important, as all high-risk AI systems placed on the market or put into service in the EU—including the ones to be deployed at the workplace—will need to demonstrate conformity with its requirements.
Moreover, the Public Enquiry on the standard prEN 18286 ‘Quality Management System for EU AI Act regulatory purposes’ closed at the beginning of this year, and all comments have been reviewed. The standard is now out for Formal Vote by the National Standardization Bodies after the harmonized standard review.
The progress achieved in the development of both these standards represents a significant contribution by CEN-CENELEC JTC 21 in support of the implementation of the AI Act.
JTC 21 is further developing harmonized standard prEN 18283 on managing bias in AI system, which defines concepts, measures and requirements for assessing and mitigating bias in AI systems. This standard was formally requested by the European Commission to facilitate the implementation of the legislative requirements regarding data and data governance. In response to the Working Draft circulated in March, the ETUC submitted a contribution during the five-week consultation period with proposals adding guidance for mitigating biases.
