First Standard Approved under the AI Act

In June, CEN and CENELEC approved EN 18286 ‘Artificial Intelligence: Quality Management System for EU AI Act Regulatory Purposes’, the first European standard developed to support the implementation of the EU AI Act.

The standard helps organizations manage AI systems responsibly throughout their life cycle, translating legal requirements into practical processes which can be verified. For consumers, this means stronger safeguards against unsafe, unfair or misleading AI. It also addresses measures on risk management, human oversight, data quality, and cybersecurity.

ANEC and its experts have contributed to the standard from the beginning, advocating for clear requirements that strengthen consumer protection and accountability.

The European Commission is expected to publish the reference to the standard in the Official Journal of the European Union later in 2026.
