Shaping Europe’s Innovation Future: Why Standardization Matters

Over the last few months, CEN and CENELEC have been reaching out to the European Parliament regarding the drafting of the European Competitiveness Fund (ECF) and the 10th EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10, 2028-2034), the successor to Horizon Europe. Together with national Members, CEN and CENELEC will continue to reach out to the Members of Parliament in the ITRE committee to convince them to build on the European Standardization Strategy and the Guiding Principles of Knowledge Valorisation and Code of Practice on Standardization in the European Research Area (full article here).

Most recently, the rapporteur MEP Christian Ehler released his report on the FP10. The proposed amendments from the ITRE committee successfully recognize standards bodies as actors within European innovation ecosystems. It is important that the amendments make it into the final legislation to ensure that European markets and society capitalize on EU R&I investments.

If you would like to participate in the advocacy of the position of standardization for the FP10 and the ECF, please reach out to Sebastian Vogel (email) for more details.

Next Steps

The draft reports were presented in the ITRE Committee on 24 March. Following this presentation, Members of the European Parliament will have the opportunity to table amendments before the reports proceed to a vote in the ITRE Committee (mid-April) and subsequently in plenary. Once adopted, the European Parliament will have its official mandate to enter into interinstitutional negotiations with the Council and the European Commission, ahead of the programme’s envisaged start on 1 January 2028.
