The European Commission, through the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), is seeking experts to contribute to the development of the future harmonized EN 16614 Network Timetable Exchange (NeTEx) standard. This strategic initiative will support the implementation of key EU legislation on multimodal travel information and rail data interoperability, helping to build a more connected and digital European transport system.
Why It Matters
As passengers increasingly rely on digital journey planners, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) applications, booking platforms, and ticketing services, the need for consistent and interoperable transport data has never been greater. The project will transform the current six-part CEN/TS 16614 (NeTEx) technical specification into a fully harmonised European Standard (hEN), creating a common framework for exchanging public transport and rail data across Europe.
The future harmonized standard will facilitate the sharing of timetables, fares, passenger information, accessibility data, and other transport-related information through National Access Points (NAPs), supporting both multimodal travel services and railway interoperability requirements.
Expert Contributions
The work will be carried out within CEN/TC 278/WG 3 (Public Transport) and will include:
- Regulatory and standards gap analysis
- Alignment with Transmodel, SIRI, Open API for Distributed Journey Planning, and related mobility standards
- Technical drafting of the future EN 16614 series
- Stakeholder consultation and validation activities
- Consensus building across transport authorities, operators, software providers, MaaS platforms, and National Access Points
The project will also collaborate closely with major European initiatives, including NAPCORE-X, EFIP, EUDIT, and Cyclinfra, ensuring consistency across the European mobility ecosystem.
