Celebrate World Book Day with Standards

On 23 April, we celebrate World Book Day—a moment to appreciate the power of books to transport us to new and exciting worlds. Books allow us to experience different perspectives, broaden our horizons, and often offer a way to escape the real world and find respite in imagined lands. Did you know that numerous standards exist to help make your reading experience seamless, no matter what format you choose to immerse yourself in a story?

Standards behind printed books

Bookbinding is both a practical skill and an art, transforming loose pages into a finished book. To ensure this process is safe in professional environments, EN ISO 12643-3:2023 sets out safety requirements for binding and finishing equipment.

Standards for accessible digital reading

In today’s digital age, World Book Day is not just about printed pages but also digital reading platforms. Accessibility standards such as EN 301549:2021 ensure that people with disabilities can access e-books, library websites, and educational content. Meanwhile, EN 62665:2016 supports access for blind and visually impaired readers by enabling printed texts to be converted into audio formats that can be easily shared.

Standards that help formats work together

Technology has also made it easier to move between formats. EN 63029:2017 helps to turn existing printed books into e-books and EN 62524:2011 ensures that e-books can be read on different devices and apps, regardless of the platform used. Furthermore, EN 62571:2011 ensures that audiobook enthusiasts can enjoy the best listening experience and audiobook publishers, device manufacturers, and software developers all work to the same rules.

Standards that preserve books for the future

Reflecting on the cultural and historical significance of books, EN ISO 9706:2025 sets requirements for long‑lasting paper so that documents can be preserved for generations. Books and other documents that meet these requirements remain stable over time, as the standard helps limit deterioration such as discolouration or loss of brightness, compared to what can happen with regular books as the years pass. This is especially important for historically, legally or culturally important documents kept in archives, libraries and museums.

World Book Day is a celebration of stories, but it is also an opportunity to recognize the systems that make these stories accessible, durable, and enjoyable for everyone. From the safety of book production to the accessibility of digital content and the preservation of knowledge for future generations, standards play a quiet yet essential role in every reading experience. As we turn the pages—whether physical or digital—it’s worth pausing to recognize the invisible framework that helps bring books to life for readers around the world.
