On 4 October, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of adopting a common charger for the EU single market. CEN and CENELEC welcome the decision and look forward to continuing to support this legislation through our standardization activities.
Ensuring the electrical compatibility between rolling stock and electric traction systems is crucial for organizing a railway network. The train operating companies must be able to know the electrification parameters to confirm, after consultation with the rolling stock manufacturers, that risks of non-compatibility are minimized and that there will be no consequential disturbances on the electrification system.
Data centres have a notoriously high demand of resources: the massively increasing demand for IT services of all kinds continues to lead to rising consumption of (among others) electricity, water and refrigerants. Therefore, it is part of the daily business of a data centre operator to optimise facilities and infrastructures in terms of energy consumption and thus improve the environmental sustainability of the data centre.
CEN and CENELEC would like to congratulate Jo Cops, from Belgium, for his election as the next President of the IEC, the International Electrotechnical Commission. Mr Cops will start his mandate in 2023 and will succeed current President Yinbiao Shu.
Cybersecurity is crucial in today’s world, as our society increasingly relies on connected infrastructure and devices. In the field of railways, connected trains and infrastructure are seen as a major source of improvement for the management of traffic and capacity, energy efficiency, and network communication. But this trend also means more potential threats of cyber-attacks. To protect the rolling stock and fixed installations, the support of adequate tools and requirements is needed.
In the field of Ecodesign and Energy Labelling, CEN and CENELEC develop European Standards that provide dedicated methods for measuring the performance of various energy-related products against the requirements determined on individual product measures adopted under the Ecodesign Framework Directive (2009/125/EC) and the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation (EU) 2017/1369.
One of the main benefits of European standards is that they make the products we use daily safer. This value is evident in EN IEC 62115:2020 “Electric toys – Safety”, which has been recently published together with its European amendment A11:2020.
