EN IEC 62115:2020 makes electric toys safer

One of the main benefits of European standards is that they make the products we use daily safer. This value is evident in EN IEC 62115:2020 “Electric toys – Safety”, which has been recently published together with its European amendment A11:2020.

This European Standard specifies safety requirements for electric toys that have at least one function dependant on electricity. The text of the EN presents some examples of electric toys that are included into its scope, such as constructional sets, electric toy computers, or a doll's house having an interior lamp.

EN IEC 62115:2020 is an updated version of a previously existing document, taking into account the latest technological developments. In particular, it improves on the previous version as it provides updated requirements for the safety of light emitting toys (especially LEDs). It also provides new requirements for the safety of remote controlled ride on toys.

By ensuring a high level of product safety in line with current technology, this standard has important benefits to offer to a wide variety of actors, such as consumers, market surveillance authorities and manufacturers. In addition, the standard and its amendment are supporting the EU Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC), which lays down the safety criteria that toys must meet before they can be marketed in the EU, and will be offered for citation in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

EN IEC 62115:2020 and its amendment A11:2020 were developed by CLC/TC 61 ‘Safety of household and similar electrical appliances’, whose Secretariat is currently held by CEI, Italy’s National Electrotechnical Committee.
