Austrian trade union addresses standardization

At their 20th Congress held in June 2023, the Austrian trade union and ETUC affiliate, ÖGB, adopted its action programme, which for the first time addresses standardization. The action programme notes in particular that the standard setting activities have increasingly expanded from industrial products to social, societal and socio-political fields.

A new standard ensures the safety of travelators for winter sports and tourist use

Travelators (also known as ‘moving walkways’) appeared over 20 years ago with the initial aim to facilitate the climbing of outdoor steep paths by children in skiing areas. Accidents on early installations led, in 2011, to the development of a first European standard, EN 15700, on the safety of travelators.

Read CEN and CENELEC’s position on Standard Essential Patents

On 27 April, the European Commission proposed a Regulation on Standard Essential Patents (SEP) and launched a consultation for public feedback. CEN and CENELEC prepared a position paper in response to this consultation, outlining the role of the European Standardization System in SEP and proposing changes to the text to better reflect this role.

On 31 July 2023, the European Commission adopted the Delegated Act on the first set of European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). CEN and CENELEC welcome its adoption and the recent changes made to include reference to standards developed by CEN, CENELEC, ISO and IEC.

CEN Workshop Fatigue4Light advanced and fast fatigue testing methods

This CEN/WS intends to develop two CWAs (Workshop Agreement). The planned Workshop intends to deliver 2 different documents related to obtaining in a limited time the materials fatigue properties. The first one, so called self-heating measurements, is based on the evolution of temperature measurements under cyclic loading. The second one, so called stiffness method measurements, is based on the evolution of the damage during cyclic loading.

CEN/TC 264 publishes 2 new standards on air quality

In July 2023, the CEN Technical Committee 264 ‘Air quality’ published the two new documents EN 15267-1:2023 ‘Air quality - Assessment of air quality monitoring equipment - Part 1: General principles of certification’ and EN 15267-2:2023  ‘Air quality - Assessment of air quality monitoring equipment - Part 2: Initial assessment of the manufacturer’s quality management system and post certification surveillance for the manufacturing process’ to improve measurement of air pollutants and support environmental protection.
