Integrate agricultural activities and photovoltaic systems

Agrivoltaics is a new development paradigm that may have wide margins for growth in the future: as the direction taken by the European Union shows, the production of energy from renewable sources should be increased, with a view to privileging sustainable solutions and reducing the reliance on fossil sources.

UNI, the Italian National Standardization Body, together with experts from ENEA, Università Cattolica and Rem Tec, has developed the reference practice UNI/PdR 148:2023 (which can be freely downloaded from UNI’s catalogue). This new document offers a solution with great potential impact thanks to three main criteria:

  • the production of electricity
  • the agricultural production of the field on which the agrivoltaic system is placed
  • and the protection of the landscape.

The document is structured in such a way as to define an overview of the types and applications of agrivoltaic systems, classifying them, defining their requirements and establishing best practices.

The objective is to ensure that agrivoltaic systems respect the principle of mutual integration between agriculture and photovoltaic technology, in line with current legislation on the matter.
