ANEC welcomed the adoption of a new European Standard for learning towers, also known as ‘kitchen helpers’.
EN 18122 ‘High chairs and learning towers – Learning towers – Requirements and test methods’ was developed by CEN/TC 364 ‘High chairs and learning towers’, following a proposal from ANEC.
ANEC raised the issue in 2021, as their analysis suggested that the products themselves not only presented fall and entrapment (and possibly other) hazards, but could also give rise to hazards by providing access to dangers such as thermal injuries, lacerations and poisonings when used close to kitchen work surfaces and in bathrooms. As the products were not covered by standards, ANEC asked CEN to consider the safety of these products to urgently reduce the risk of injury to children.
ANEC was active in the work and prepared the first draft of rationales for the draft standard in 2023.
