Austrian trade union addresses standardization

At their 20th Congress held in June 2023, the Austrian trade union and ETUC affiliate, ÖGB, adopted its action programme, which for the first time addresses standardization. The action programme notes in particular that the standard setting activities have increasingly expanded from industrial products to social, societal and socio-political fields.

ÖGB opposes such expansion and having standardization tackle fields that are better addressed in legislation, collective agreements, and through social dialogue, especially as regards issues related to Occupational Health and Safety, working conditions and workload.

In that context, the ETUC is organising together with ÖGB, AK Wien, and the Austrian Standards Institute (ASI), a national awareness event around standardisation that will take place in Vienna on Friday 24 November 2023. The aim of the event is to provide trade unions with the opportunity to exchange directly with their National Standardization Body, and to inform them about standards setting activities, and discuss the role of trade unions in standardization.
