The ETUC speaks at the European Commission’s High-Level Forum on Standardization

The ETUC participated to the second meeting of the European Commission’s High-Level Forum on Standardization (HLF), held in Brussels on Thursday 30 November. The Forum, chaired by Commissioner Thierry Breton, gathered the various stakeholders involved in standardization to discuss priorities and horizontal issues, including international leadership and education and skills.

The ETUC signed on the occasion the Pledge for Education and Skills on Standards, as we commit to continue providing and promoting training and raising awareness activities on standardization for the generations to come.

Moreover, Oliver Röthig, Director of UNIEuropa speaking on behalf of the ETUC, highlighted the importance of standards for workers as they contribute in making the work environment a safer place. He further noted that the role of trade unions is to add the workers’ perspective in the standardization process, and with that view it is essential to facilitate their participation, to ensure the European standardization system is truly inclusive and that standards deliver for all. At the same time, he expressed concern with the growing share of standards being elaborated at international level by ISO and IEC, which do not align with regulation 1025/2012 and as such with EU law.
