Freight transport is a cornerstone of the economic health of our countries. We need safe, efficient and sustainable logistics to transport goods across Europe. European standards contribute to ensure strong requirements for packaging, cargo securing and transport of dangerous goods.
Transport of Dangerous Goods
The supply of various extremely sensitive material is fundamental for many sectors of the European industry and research and development. Transporting toxic, flammable, radioactive or corrosive substances requires high safety measures and specific design for the transport and protection devices. European standards play a fundamental role by defining the key technical requirements for the design of the tanks and safety devices, the testing, and the inspection protocol. As the International transport of dangerous goods is highly regulated through a series of International Treaties, CEN & CENELEC standards play a key role in support of the technical requirements of these pieces of legislation.
Cargo securing and intermodal units
Securing cargo and allowing bi-modal freight transport (rail/road) requires technical requirements on safety methods, dimensions and testing. European standards can provide points of reference for these requirements. CEN & CENELEC develop standards in that sense, allowing operators.
Packaging
Transport of goods requires adequate packaging, whatever the nature of the goods. Packaging design requires adequate balance between the core protection purpose and environmental criteria such as the capacity of reuse or recycling. European standards allow to the producer of packaging to conceive their packaging based on these various objectives. At the same time, a series of these standards support the European legislation on packaging and packaging waste, contributing to a better management of the cycle of life of packaging in Europe.
