Two key standards supporting safe steam sterilization and pressure equipment have been cited in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU). EN 13060:2025 on small steam sterilizers and EN 14222:2021+A1:2025 on stainless steel steam boilers now provide harmonized tools to demonstrate conformity with the Medical Device Regulation for a wide range of sterilization equipment.
A new joint CEN-CENELEC Workshop is being planned as part of the activities of the EU project “CYMEDSEC” - “Enhanced Cybersecurity for Networked Medical Devices through Optimisation of Guidelines, Standards, Risk Management and Security by Design”. This project is focussed on cybersecurity in Europe’s healthcare systems and revolutionizing patient care.
A new CEN Workshop is being planned as part of the activities of the EU project 'Caring Nature'. This project focuses its energies on reducing the carbon footprint of the healthcare sector. This is no small task, and many innovative solutions are needed that consider the safety and health of both patients and operators.
The CEN Workshop on was kicked off on 4th June 2025. The Workshop’s registered participants have agreed on the first draft of the CWA.
Two standards have recently been published on patient handling equipment used in ambulances, developed by CEN/TC 239 ‘Rescue Systems’. EN 1865-2:2024 improves the performance of power assisted stretchers while EN 1865-6:2024 specifies requirements for powered chairs. These standards address safety and performance gaps, helping to protect both patients and caregivers.
A new CEN Workshop is being established to build upon the innovative outcomes of the R&I project BiSCUIT, funded under the Horizon Europe programme. The project focuses on the validation of a dynamic and biomimetic blood-brain barrier model, integrating sensing features to allow a real-time evaluation of barrier formation and integrity maintenance.
Two standards establishing an International Patient Summary, EN 17269:2019 and CEN/TS 17288:2020, were recently developed by CEN/TC 251 'Health informatics'. These standards cover the requirements for exchanging a core, essential dataset of healthcare data to support the continuity of care for a patient, whenever and wherever it is needed.
CEN/TC 159 ‘Hearing protectors’ recently developed a series of new standards that provide a high level of safety for hearing protectors including conformity assessment methods for the integration of electronic communication facilities.
