The European standardisation system is a global success story. After the release of the European Standardisation Strategy in 2022, it became clear that the work of standardisation was growing in its role as an integral tool of the European Single Market.

2022 is the European Year of Youth. To celebrate this occasion, throughout the year CEN and CENELEC have been conducting a campaign consisting a regular series of interviews with young professionals active in European standardization, to get to know them and their aspirations. For the twelfth and last episode of the series, we interview Ewa Zielinska, President of Poland's Committee for Standardization (PKN) and CENELEC Vice-President Policy.

Elena Santiago Cid, CEN and CENELEC’s Director General, spoke at the “Cooperating on Digital Policy and Tech Standards” panel during the dedicated hybrid stakeholder roundtable at the occasion of the third Ministerial Meeting of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) between the EU and the US. Yet security and vulnerability issues along the value chain are raising complex questions about the future of trusted chips. On Friday 2 December, CEN and CENELEC hosted a stakeholders’ workshop discussing the standardization landscape and opportunities for Europe in the microchips value chain.

Two European standardization experts, Beatriz Novel and Valérie Demassieux, are among the recipients of the 2022 Thomas A. Edison Awards by the IEC, the International Electrotechnical Committee. The awards were presented officially on 1 November during the IEC General Meeting that took place this week in San Francisco.

On 4 October 2022, the EU Parliament voted in favour of adopting a common charger for the EU single market, through an amendment to the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), which establishes a single charging solution for small and medium size electronic devices regardless of their manufacturer. Those devices shall be equipped with USB-C receptable at the device side by 2024 to access the EU market. The same requirements will also become applicable to laptops in 2026.
