A new CEN Workshop is being planned which will complement the activities of the EU Research project "NeoGiANT". This initiative is developing natural antimicrobial products for the control and prevention of relevant diseases in animal production from agri-food byproducts.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a process that occurs naturally, at a slow pace, through genetic changes over time. However, the increased use of antibiotics in animal food production is accelerating the process which exacerbates the problem of the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. This creates health risks to both humans and animals and has become a global problem.
The NeoGiANT project seeks to validate and promote the natural antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of white grape marc, the solid residue of white grapes (skins, seeds, stems) after the juice of the fruit has been extracted. As a bioproduct, this is an interesting and sustainable option in the area of feeding, health and reproduction of cattle, swine, poultry and farmed fish. It has the potential to reduce the dependence on the constant use of antibiotics in animal/aquaculture production.
Determining the bioactivities in extracts such as in white grape marc is very useful, but it is often difficult to compare results. This is compounded by variability in quantification, meaning regulation and quality control cannot be managed easily. As a response to this, the proposed CEN Workshop aims to harmonize two methodologies to determine Total Polyphenolic Content (TPC) and Antioxidant Activity (AA) in extracts from agri-food by-products.
The resulting CWA will be a crucial step in the standardization of methodologies for the determination of bioactivities. It is important to note that the value of this research lies also in the fact that the methodologies are not limited to the use of the white grape marc but can be extrapolated to extracts from other agri-food waste such as fruits or vegetables.
The kick-off meeting for the Workshop will take place remotely on Monday 22 September from 9.00 until 12.00 (CEST). To attend remotely, please use this link.
All interested parties are invited to submit comments on the draft Project Plan using the commenting form below, to the Workshop Secretary Tania Marcos Paramio (UNE) (TMARCOS@une.org).
