From Podcasts to Play: Standards Norway Makes Standardization Accessible and Fun

From podcasts to board games, Standards Norway is finding creative new ways to bring standardization to life. Whether exploring the implications of the EU AI Act, simulating consensus-building around the table, or offering online learning for businesses, these initiatives make standards more relevant, interactive, and inspiring than ever.

Podcast: How to AI Act

As the host of the meetings of the standardization committee on Artificial Intelligence earlier this year, Standards Norway produced the podcast series How to AI Act.

What does the AI Act mean for Norway and Europe, and how will it be implemented in practice? How can standards contribute to innovation, trust, and competitiveness? In this podcast, you can listen to talks with experts and stakeholders from both Norway and Europe about how we can build a responsible AI landscape.

The podcast series consists of five episodes, three of which are in English – including one featuring Dr Tatjana Evas from the European Commission and Sebastian Hallensleben, Chair of the European Standardization Committee.

One of the episodes in Norwegian features Karianne Oldernes Tung, Norway’s Minister of Digitalization and Public Governance.

How to AI Act is available on several podcast platforms, including Spotify.

Board Game on Standardization

How is a standard developed, and what does consensus really mean in practice? The board game “Seriously Standard Game” is a training tool that illustrates how standards can support international market access. Participants experience how cooperation, strategy, and consensus influence the development of standards.

In the game, participants face different dilemmas and must make decisions that will affect the outcome of the process. This gives them insight into how standardization work is carried out, and how their choices shape the results.

The game is suitable for both beginners and experienced participants.

The goal is to gain a better understanding of:

  • The principle of consensus and how it works in practice
  • How the standardization process works
  • How you and your organization can influence the work

The board game was launched internationally at the ISO/GA in September.

Online courses

In cooperation with Innovation Norway, Standards Norway have developed three online courses aimed primarily at export-oriented companies. However, the courses are also useful for other types of companies. They cover topics such as standards and standardization, product labelling, and CE marking.

The courses have been very well received, with a completion rate that is both strong and higher than the average for courses offered by Innovation Norway.

The following courses are available:

1. Standards and Standardization

This course provides an introduction to standards and the standardization process, both in Norway and internationally. It offers practical guidance on navigating relevant standards and shows how organizations can actively contribute to developing them.

2. Product Requirements and Labelling

In today’s global market, understanding and complying with product and labelling regulations is essential. This course helps participants identify the requirements relevant to their products and services and explains how to meet them early in the process, saving both time and costs later.

3. CE Marking Step by Step

This course explains what CE marking is, the responsibilities it entails, and how the certification process works step by step.
