The RISERS roadmap on industrial symbiosis standardization is being developed as a strategic reference for European and national standardization bodies, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and R&I actors. It supports the objectives of the Circular Economy Action Plan and the EU Standardization Strategy, while contributing to ongoing policy files such as the revision of the Waste Framework Directive, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), and the upcoming European Innovation Act. By identifying standardization needs in ten priority areas—from end-of-waste criteria and digital traceability to sector-specific value chains, such as batteries, steel, and textiles—the roadmap aims to enable the broader uptake of industrial symbiosis across Europe.
It builds on extensive stakeholder engagement, including the mapping of over 600 industrial symbiosis cases, targeted consultations with CEN and CENELEC Technical Committees, and a first round of Working Group meetings held throughout spring 2025. The November plenary is a key milestone to validate preliminary recommendations, consolidate cross-cutting findings, and define the next phase of roadmap development. It will ensure that the final roadmap is actionable, inclusive, and aligned with Europe’s policy ambitions for circularity, innovation, and sustainable industrial transformation.
