On Thursday 15 May 2025, CEN/TC 444 organizes a hybrid workshop in Prague and virtually during its annual meeting week to launch the work of WG 8, Assessment and it invites experts and policy makers to join our mission to standardize assessment methods for the environmental characterization of soil, solid and liquid waste, biowaste, and sludge.
The working group will work on various assessment methods that can be adopted and refined collaboratively. It aims to explore, among others, issues such as desertification, salinization, erosion, desiccation, rewetting, compaction and acidification. While there are methods that provide valuable insights into specific soil characteristics, no comprehensive assessment method exists yet (e.g., akin to a “Richter scale” for soil health).
The first goal is to develop assessment frameworks that evaluate the vulnerability of soils to threats like erosion. This approach would consider not only soil properties but also land use, possibly extending beyond the traditional technical criteria, conceivably leading to a standardized scale for soil vulnerability. Herein, the working group will not establish limit values, but will focus on providing a measuring stick.
Additionally, it’s crucial to emphasize that the aim is to align closely with existing policy frameworks established elsewhere, ensuring methods are relevant and actionable within those guidelines.
We seek your innovative ideas and expertise to help develop and shape these assessment standards and contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Europe. During the workshop, we will set out our ideas and we invite all interested parties to participate.
