Every year on 28 April, millions of people come together to observe International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD), a day dedicated to remembering workers who have tragically lost their lives, become disabled, or suffered injury or illness due to unsafe working conditions.
More than just a day of mourning, it is a reminder of the need to strengthen safety standards, better protect workers, and reflect on how to prevent future tragedies. Striving for safer workplaces is a continuous, shared effort that requires a broader commitment because no one should die just for doing their job!
For this year’s IWMD, the ETUC put special attention on the growing challenge of psychosocial risks at work. These are factors in the workplace that can negatively affect workers' psychological and physical well-being, arising from how work is designed, organized, and managed, as well as from the social context of work. To mark the occasion, the ETUC released a special edition of its Standardization newsletter, featuring their work in addressing psychosocial risks at work through standards and outlining future actions.
