International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: the role of standardization

It is never easy to fight against deep-rooted cultural beliefs, even if they are ideologically wrong and generate inequalities. However, one of the tasks of standardization is to encourage transformations, providing the community with the foundation and tools to achieve big and small changes.

Breaking down the wall of gender stereotypes is one of these changes, which UNI (the Italian National Standardization Body) has supported since 2019 when - by signing the UNECE Gender Responsive Standards Declaration – it committed to giving greater power and value to women also through a standardization process that takes gender diversity into account.

The commitment continued within the organization by setting up a governance model based on and creating a diversified, inclusive and fair working environment.

Then, with the publication of the we wanted to provide a useful tool to all organizations wishing to adopt a management system for gender equality, establishing criteria, technical requirements and functional elements for certification.

Finally, UNI has joined the Libellula Foundation, a network of companies created with the aim of mobilizing on a cultural level to prevent and combat violence against women and gender discrimination. UNI organizes periodic training meetings and has supported the opening of Spazio Libellula in Milan. This is the first project in the area aimed at preventing and combating gender violence through training courses.

UNI firmly supports the fight against gender violence - not only on November 25th, even though on that day, the website was entirely dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - to build a more just and inclusive society, based on the culture of respect.
