CEN and CENELEC joined the Equality Platform for the Energy sector

On 13 September 2022, CEN and CENELEC officially became signatories of the Equality Platform for the Energy sector. Through this endorsement, CEN and CENELEC pledge to support the efforts towards promoting equal opportunities in the European energy sector.

The Equality platform for the energy sector was established in 2021 by the European Commission. It provides a forum to discuss equality related issues, facilitate the exchange of experiences, and highlight good practices, while acting as an accelerator for concrete actions to achieve gender equality.

Diversity and inclusion are key to ensure equality in business, politics and society, and the energy sector is no exception. In this spirit, the platform invites all stakeholders involved in the European energy sector to sign the Declaration of the Equality Platform for the Energy Sector and commit to working together towards concrete actions contributing to gender equality.

Equality, Inclusiveness and Diversity are core values of the CEN and CENELEC system.

As two of the officially recognised European Standardization Organizations (ESOs), CEN and CENELEC work to ensure that standards development processes are accessible to all interested stakeholders and deliver standards that equally benefit all users, regardless of their profiles. Therefore, the Equality Platform for the Energy Sector provides a welcome opportunity for CEN and CENELEC to act on this ambition.

By becoming signatories, CEN and CENELEC further reaffirm their commitment towards an open, inclusive, and accessible standardization system. Through the facilitation of exchanges with key European stakeholders in the energy sector, the Platform will provide the CEN and CENELEC community with best practices to attract new stakeholders to standardization and thus reinforce the standardization expert base in the energy sector.

In turn, this expertise will allow CEN and CENELEC to:

  • contribute to the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the UN SDGs in support of the international climate agenda, as highlighted in the London Declaration
  • further support a successful twin (Green and Digital) transition for Europe
  • contribute to the diversity and inclusion ambitions of CEN and CENELEC, as highlighted in CEN and CENELEC Strategy 2030 (specifically on Goal 4 “The CEN and CENELEC system to be the preferred choice for standardization in Europe”).

In preparation of the 2022 European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), CEN and CENELEC are delighted to join all other members and signatories of the Platform in their quest towards a more equal and inclusive energy sector, and invite all interested European actors to take part in this collective effort.
