Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies
CEN-CLC/JTC 19 ‘Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies’ was established based on the recommendations presented in the CEN-CENELEC White Paper on ‘Recommendations for Successful Adoption in Europe of Emerging Technical Standards on Distributed Ledger/Blockchain Technologies’ and supports the adoption of international standards for blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, with a focus on European policy and regulatory needs. It builds on the work of the CEN-CENELEC Focus Group and cooperates closely with ISO/TC 307.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
CEN-CLC/JTC 21 ‘Artificial Intelligence’ develops standards that reflect European values and requirements while adopting relevant international work, particularly from ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 42. The committee continues efforts initiated by the former CEN-CENELEC Focus Group on AI, including responses to EU policy initiatives such as CEN-CENELEC response to the EC White Paper on AI.
Quantum Technologies (QT)
CEN-CLC/JTC 22 ‘Quantum Technologies’ develops standards which are crucial elements to accelerate the adoption of this emerging technology, ensure interoperability, safety, and performance. High attention focused on the following topics such as quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, quantum cryptography and benchmarks. By establishing common standards for the European single market, the committee aims to increase the reliability of quantum devices, protocols, and systems which can be integrated into broader ICT infrastructures. The join technical committee co-ordinates their activities with its international counterparties such as IEC-ISO/JTC 3. The roadmap of Quantum Technologies is “streamlining” the current and future standardization efforts by the committee.
Smart Grids and the All-Electric Society
CENELEC is actively supporting Europe’s transition to a smarter, more sustainable energy system through targeted standardization work in key strategic areas.
BTWG 16-3 – All-Electric Society
The BTWG 16-3 working group focuses on supporting the shift to an All-Electric Society by promoting the electrification of buildings, transport, and industry. It ensures coordination across technical committees, identifies standardization needs, and advises the CENELEC Technical Board on avoiding duplication and ensuring consistency in related standards.
CEN-CENELEC-ETSI Coordination Group - COG Smart grids
The COG Smart Grids group coordinates smart grid standardization across Europe, aligning with EU policies such as the Clean Energy Package and the Digital Agenda. It serves as a platform for collaboration among CEN, CENELEC, ETSI, the European Commission, ENTSO-E, DSO entities, and other stakeholders.
The group focuses on key areas including interoperability, cybersecurity, energy efficiency, and the integration of smart metering systems for electricity, gas, heat, and water. Its structure includes dedicated working groups covering policy, standard sets, and smart metering (including the application of the RED and TR 50572).
COG Smart Grids plays a crucial role in supporting the development of harmonized European standards to ensure reliable, secure, and future-ready energy infrastructure. Regular meetings and updates help align technical progress with Europe’s strategic energy and digital goals.
