The twin green and digital transitions open new opportunities for the European industry and citizens, in a quickly changing global scenario. But does Europe have what it takes? How can we make sure that it has the skills and the workforce to remain competitive in the global economy? And what is the role of standardization?

This CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) aims to cover standardisation gaps of the evaluation phase and lessons learnt documentation of an exercise of crisis management.

The Bulgarian Institute for Standardization (BDS) and the Romanian Standards Association (ASRO), in partnership with four universities, started in November 2022 the implementation of a two-year project, B-Green-ED - Boosting the Green Future via University Micro-Credentials, funded by the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission.

Last year, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of a resolution calling on the Commission to “propose a common legal framework to ensure fair remuneration for traineeships and apprenticeships in order to avoid exploitative practices”, following a campaign by the ETUC Youth Committee (see ETUC press release of 10 November 2022). The issue of internships is now on the European Commission’s Work Programme for 2023.

By 2024, the small Republic of San Marino could have its own national standardization body. In the meantime, it has started structuring an accreditation body, with the ambitious goal of European mutual recognition.

The first meeting of the new four-year term of the ANEC General Assembly was held in Brussels on 14 & 15 June 2023. It saw elections to the Office Bearer posts of the association, as well as to the Steering Committee (the board of ANEC).

The ETUC participated to the second meeting of the European Commission’s High-Level Forum on Standardization (HLF), held in Brussels on Thursday 30 November. The Forum, chaired by Commissioner Thierry Breton, gathered the various stakeholders involved in standardization to discuss priorities and horizontal issues, including international leadership and education and skills.

CEN and CENELEC support the objectives of the revision of the safety of toys Directive (2009/48/EC) and the proposal for a safety of toys Regulation (COM (2023)462) to increase children’s safety and improve protection from harmful chemicals.
