Shaping the Future: A New Era for European Standardization

CEN and CENELEC acknowledge the challenges presented by shifting geoeconomic dynamics, and Europe’s need to leverage emerging technologies to stimulate competitiveness.

To find solutions, we commit to work together with policy makers and industry stakeholders to advance the European Standardization System and embrace these current changes (e.g. digitalization and improving the timely availability of standards).

How will we shape the future of European Standardization?

  1. Achieve timely standard development and citation in the Official Journal of the EU.
  2. Tap into the potential of all standardization deliverables.
  3. Strengthen Europe’s role and impact in international standardization.
  4. Strengthen the European Single Market through a clear legal framework for the use of European Standards.
  5. Uphold the importance of copyright and intellectual property while supporting Commission in implementing the ruling on the free readability.
  6. Foster inclusiveness and a wide stakeholder participation.

The European Commission is currently presenting a package of revisions that will shape the future of the ESS.

See below key information on these future legislations.

Discussion Paper: “Call for Evidence on the Revision of the New Legislative Framework”

The New Legislative Framework (NLF) is the backbone of the European Single Market for products. Built on a public-private partnership, it clearly separates the role of legislators from that of standards: the former set out essential requirements, while the latter, through the work of experts via European Standardization Organizations (e.g. CEN, CENELEC, ETSI), provide the technical specification on how to respond to these requirements.

The specialist knowledge that experts contribute to standardization is put to optimum use, and the legal framework remains efficient.
