As climate change continues to affect the safety, reliability and performance of infrastructure, products, and services across Europe, standardization has an increasingly important role to play in building climate resilience. Rising temperatures, flooding, droughts, wildfires, storms and other climate-related hazards challenge many of the assumptions on which standards are based.
To support Technical Committees and standards developers in addressing these challenges, CEN published the new CEN-CENELEC Guide 32:2026 – Guide for Addressing Climate Change Adaptation in Standards. The Guide provides a practical and structured framework to identify climate vulnerabilities, assess climate-sensitive assumptions and integrate adaptation considerations into standardization deliverables.
Designed as a hands-on implementation tool, Guide 32 helps Technical Committees future-proof standards against changing climate conditions, extreme weather events and climate-related risks.
The Guide introduces a four-step methodology that supports Technical Committees in:
- Identifying whether climate adaptation is relevant to a standard;
- Screening for climate-sensitive provisions;
- Assessing climate-related vulnerabilities and assumptions;
- Embedding adaptation considerations into standards for products, services and infrastructure.
By applying this approach, standards developers can help ensure that future European standards remain fit for purpose under both current and future climate conditions.
