Women in ICT Standardization Coffee Chat – Connecting, Supporting, and Empowering Women in Standardization

Launched by Shikha Shahi, DIN Expert and Senior Standards Professional at Microsoft, the Women in ICT Standardization Coffee Chat is a quarterly virtual gathering designed to foster community and inclusion among women working in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) standardization.

The purpose is to:

  • Build informal networks across industry, standards bodies, and government.
  • Support women and newcomers entering the field by offering shared experiences, and a welcoming space to learn and grow.
  • Promote inclusion and diversity in the standardization process.

The standardization domain has long faced challenges with gender imbalance. Newcomers often struggle with access to resources, lack of onboarding, and navigating entrenched committee cultures. The coffee chat aims to break down these barriers by creating a space where women and new entrants can build confidence, find allies, and contribute meaningfully.

Voices from the Community

Some participants have already shared their thought on the initiative:

“Honest and open”

“Amazing! Love the informal setting and the small group”

General Format of the Coffee Chat

Each session typically runs for one hour and includes:

  • Icebreaker & Introductions – 15 minutes
  • Discussion on a topic – 40 minutes
Example: Allyship and how to be a good ally
  • Wrap-up & Feedback – 5 minutes
