On May 16, 2025, the Portuguese National Standardization Body – IPQ (Instituto Português da Qualidade) – officially launched NormIA, an AI-powered virtual assistant designed to support citizens and businesses in understanding and applying standards.
Available 24/7 via the IPQ website, NormIA offers real-time, user-friendly guidance on a wide range of standardization topics. These include how to access standards, the process of national adoption, the role of technical committees, and the responsibilities of IPQ. It is particularly effective in clarifying references to standards within national and European legislation – a recurring challenge for users assessing the relevance and applicability of specific normative documents.
NormIA is tailored to help users navigate the complexities of standardization, drawing on a reliable, up-to-date knowledge base that includes content from the national normative collection, the IPQ website, the Official Journal of the European Union, and the Diário da República (Official Journal of the Portuguese Republic). Its development was led by a multidisciplinary team of IT and standardization specialists, in collaboration with Technical Committees and stakeholders operating across diverse fields of activity.
During the launch event, attendees could see a live demonstration of NormIA's capabilities. The event highlighted its potential as a decision-support tool, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking to understand and apply standards effectively, making compliance more accessible and less time-consuming.
NormIA reflects IPQ’s commitment to innovation and digital transformation in public service, aligning with Portugal's broader strategy to modernize public administration.
For other National Standardization Bodies (NSBs), NormIA may serve as a reference point for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into standardization activities — strengthening transparency and reinforcing the public value of standards.
NormIA is now available to all users via the IPQ website, offering a reliable, informed entry point into the world of standards.
