How European Standards Keep the Holidays Safe, Sustainable, and Joyful

The holiday season is a time of celebration, generosity, and togetherness. Homes are filled with festive lights, carefully wrapped gifts, and tables laden with seasonal treats. Behind this familiar Christmas magic, however, lies an invisible but essential framework that helps ensure safety, quality, and sustainability: European Standards.

Let’s unwrap the magic of standards that ensure Christmas stays joyful and safe for everyone!

Festive Treats

From chocolates to cookies, food safety is essential all year round, but especially during the holidays, when food is often shared and gifted. Standards like EN 1186 and EN 13130 ensure that materials intended to come in contact with food do not pose health risks, while EN 15593 sets hygiene requirements for food packaging. These standards guarantee that your Christmas sweets are not only delicious but also safe and hygienically packaged.

Toys Under the Tree

Toys are among the most eagerly anticipated Christmas gifts, particularly for children. European standards play a crucial role in making sure these moments of excitement remain safe. The EN 71 series covers key safety aspects of toys, including mechanical and physical properties, flammability, and chemical composition. For battery-operated toys, EN IEC 62115 sets essential electrical safety requirements. By reducing risks such as choking, burns, or exposure to harmful substances, these standards help protect children and give parents peace of mind during the festive season.

Sustainable Packaging

Christmas generates a surge in packaging waste, with a myriad of gift boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons, and shipping materials. Standards like EN 13427EN 13429EN 13430, and EN 13432 focus on the environmental impact of packaging after use and set out requirements for packaging to be reusable, recyclable or biodegradable. Thanks to them, manufacturers have a guide to reduce their environmental impact during the festive period.

Lighting Up the Holidays

Festive decoration plays an important role in creating a nice and cosy Christmas atmosphere. Fairy lights and illuminated decorations help create that magic, and standards ensure everything runs safely. EN 60598 is responsible for safety requirements for luminaires, reducing the risk of electric shocks or short circuits, while EN 62471 covers the photobiological safety of lamps, putting safety measures in place to protect from biological effects, including infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, and retinal thermal injuries.

Candles add warmth to Christmas, but they also pose fire risks. Luckily, with EN 15493, candles can be safely lit inside every home. In addition, EN 15494 provides labelling requirements for safety information, and EN 15426 addresses the sooting behaviour of indoor candles. Thanks to these standards, candles and accessories are safer, reducing the risk of accidents during festive gatherings.

European standards are the unsung heroes of Christmas. They protect consumers, support sustainability, and ensure that festive products meet high safety and quality benchmarks, from sweets all the way to Christmas lights. So, next time you unwrap a gift or light a candle, remember: standards help make the magic of Christmas possible.
