Launch of the CEN Workshop 'SURPASS - Challenge test for analysing presence of contaminants before / after samples decontamination'

A new CEN Workshop is being planned which will complement the activities of the EU project 'SURPASS'. The aim of this project is to lead the transition towards more safe, sustainable and recyclable by design (SSRbD) polymeric materials

Plastics play a big role in the transition to a greener, more sustainable Europe. They remain irreplaceable for many different applications across many industries and are therefore a strategic part of Europe’s transition towards a carbon neutral and circular economy. The EU project SURPASS seeks to demonstrate how innovative technologies can help Small and Medium Enterprises in the building, transport and packaging sectors move towards a safer and more sustainable integration of polymeric materials.

In complement to this European project, a CEN Workshop has been proposed that will define and demonstrate an artificial contamination method. This method, referred to as a 'challenge test' can be used to check the performance of decontamination processes in a balanced and comparable way. Currently no common European method exists, and there are few decontamination processes at industrial scale for plastic wastes. This Workshop will therefore fill an important gap by providing a consistent reference method that can be used to control the performance of decontamination processes and quantify their contribution to the removal of contaminants from plastic wastes. This will in turn help companies who need to comply with EU regulations which specify the maximum allowed presence of contaminants.

The outcome of this CEN Workshop is proposed as a CWA that differs from existing non-harmonized methods in lowering the toxicity of selected contaminants to better protect the health of laboratory and production workers working on decontamination processes.

The kick-off meeting for the Workshop will be an online meeting and is planned to take place via Microsoft Teams on 2nd July 2025 from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm (CEST). The link is in the agenda document below.

All interested parties are invited to submit comments on the draft Project Plan using the commenting form below, to the Workshop Secretary, Teresa Sanchez Segura (tsanchez@une.org), by June 27th, 2025.
