New EN 62552 ‘Household refrigerating appliances - Characteristics and test methods’ series 

In the field of Ecodesign and Energy Labelling, CEN and CENELEC develop European Standards that provide dedicated methods for measuring the energy performance of various energy-related products against the requirements determined on individual product measures adopted under the Ecodesign Framework Directive (2009/125/EC) and the Energy Labelling Framework Regulation (EU) 2017/1369.

In particular, CLC/TC 59X ‘Performance of household and similar electrical appliances’, whose Secretariat is currently held by DKE, develops European Standards on methods of measurement for characteristics which are important to determine the performance of electrical appliances for household or commercial use that are of interest for the user.

In 2019, the European Commission adopted new  Ecodesign and Energy Labelling requirements for individual energy-related product groups, such as household refrigerating appliances. The requirements include new methods to determine the energy consumption of products, deliver accurate test results and assess performances aiming at reflecting the real usage conditions.

In this context, CLC/TC 59X/WG 08 ‘Performance of electrical household and similar cooling and freezing appliances’ revised EN 62552:2013 ‘Household refrigerating appliances - Characteristics and test methods’, and last April published a series of new standards:

These new documents adopt the texts of IEC 62552-1:2015, IEC 62552-2:2015 and IEC 62552-3:2015 prepared by IEC/TC 59 ‘Performance of household and similar electrical appliances’, together with the common modifications prepared by CLC/TC 59X to reflect the already available experiences with the standards from other regions. The aim is to improve and to eliminate unclear or ambiguous definitions and to incorporate specific requirements set by the new Ecodesign and Energy labelling requirements for household refrigerating appliances.

For example, thanks to these new standards, the customers will receive now an appliance which is developed for a wider ambient temperature range. In addition, to reflect the market trend to offer the customer appliances with more compartment and temperature zones than just a fridge or freezer compartment, a wide range of different compartment types were defined.
